Near to our new base at Killinure Point, stop off at Athlone, remarkable for its imposing castle. You should also stopover at Clonmacnoise, with its exceptional heritage dating from the 6th century. To the south of Athlone, you can take the lower Shannon. Are you passionate about fishing? Then Shannon Harbour will be the ideal place for you. Continue along your route to Banagher: This is the departure point for visiting Portumna and its magnificent Renaissance castle renowned for the fineness of its architecture and the beauty of its French gardens. A little further along, pike, trout, salmon, bream and other fish await the fishermen in the waters of Lake Dergh.
The Shannon-Erne Waterway, with its 16 automatic locks, joins the Erne to the north, the other great Irish river. The river, which is 63 km long with 34 of the most picturesque bridges, allows you to navigate through a latticework of rivers, canals, lakes and islands, out of which appear typical villages. You glide toward Ballyconnel and Belturbet, where folklore is still very much alive. Then you will enter the kingdom of the lakes in County Fermanagh, a paradise for birds, flowers and fishermen. At the town of Enniskillen, just inside Ulster, you enter “the land of the five lakes and five hundred islands”!
